Have High Cholesterol. Dull Pain Under Arm. I Have Taken Pain Relief And Applied Heat With No Relief. Suggestions?

I am 32 years old with no health issues, only high cholesterol (typically 7.0). I have a very dull pain under my upper left arm for last 24 hours. I do not recall injuring it. I have taken pain relief and applied heat with no relief. The pain is more distractingly irritating than severely painful, so I don't think that it is serious. However would you have any suggestions on what it night be ?

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

Pain in the upper left arm can be arising from a number of structures around it:
1. Shoulder joint and/or muscles making the joint.
2. Nerve of the area being compressed in the neck.
3. Referred pain of cardiac origin.
As the pain has not been relieved by pain killers and hot fomentation it is advisalbe to get yourself clinically evaluated since you have a history of high cholesterol. The clinical history and examination would guide the doctor who may suggest you appropriate remedial measures.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing you an early recovery.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

A dull aching pain in the arm without any history of injury and is present constantly without any relation to the movements of the arm suggests some pathology in the bone (humerus).

An xray of the involved bone diagnoses any bony pathology. MRI scan of the symptomatic area will ruleout any soft tissue problems causing you pain.

I suggest you to consult an orthopedic surgeon for a detailed workup and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
