Have Crick In The Left Side Of My Neck. Feels Like A Portion Has Got Numb. Should I Be Worried About The Findings?

Hello, a few nights back I fell asleep in a seated position on the couch and afterwards (and as of now) I have a crick in the left side of my neck. On the same side - but my head - a portion of the skin has gone somewhat numb. Now I am a little worried. Can you explain what could have possible happened internally? Thanks, Rich.

Hello,
thanks for using health care magic

It is likely that you have a cervical strain which is due to excessive strain on the neck muscles and or ligaments. This would be due to the position you must have adopted while you were on the couch.

Cervical strain generally is a benign condition and should get better within a few days provided appropriate care ( avoiding to strain further the neck) is adopted. Such care include;
-adopting comfortable sleeping positions without flexing or using a high pillow,
-avoid staying for long period infront of the screen in order not to strain the neck muscles and
-avoid carrying loads on the head for now.

However, a few pain killers such as paracetamol/acetaminophen or ibuprofen together with some skeletal muscle relaxant such as thiocolchicoside (miorel) which your doctor can prescribe will greatly help you.

Hope this helps you.
Best regards
