Had Tonsillectomy, Intermittent Itching. Prescribed Oxycodone, Benadryl And Tylenol. Side Effect?

Hi,
My 20 yr old daughter had a tonsillectomy (t&a) on Friday. She was prescribed Oxycodone solution, I am also giving her Tylenol for pain. She has developed an intermittent itch all over her body, which I think is related to the oxycodone. She has no difficulty breathing. Is it safe to give her Benadryl 25 mg to help relieve the itching? Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.

From your query i understood that your daughter have intermittent itching after surgery.

Medications can cause itching, if she have any allergy to particular drug.

But itching can also occur variety of conditions ranging from dry skin to very bad disease like cancer.
It can be due to skin infection, creams, lotions, clothing next to the skin etc..
Itching can be a symptom of anemia, thyroid disese, Liver disease, jaundice etc.

Please check whether she have any rashes or other lesion like scales, bumps in the itchy area.
If present, then you most probably need dermatologist advice and treatment.
It not, then consult a General physician for examination and further follow up.

If you think drug is to be a cause, Just withdraw a drug and substitute the other drug with the help of your Physician.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
