First Trimester Pregnancy With Descending Placenta And Open Cervix. Advised Cervix Cerclage. Is Procedure Safe For The Baby?
Hi... I am 10 weeks2 days pregnant.. Yesterday i had a scan and the doctor said that the cervix is open a bit and also the placenta has shifted downwards a little. He has suggested for cervical stitches to be taken in next 2 days. Can you please suggest if it is safe to go ahead with the stiches in the 10 week itself.. Will the anesthia given affect the baby? Hoping to hear from you soon.
Hello and welcome to HCM, As the pregnancy progresses, the cervical lips are closely apposed to each other. This prevents the shifting of the gestational sac and placenta. Failure of the cervical lips to close during pregnancy is called cervical incompetency. This condition is corrected by applying stitches to the cervical lips. This procedure holds the cervix temporarily till the child birth. During delivery the stitches can be removed for allowing vaginal delivery. The procedure is safe for you and baby and is done under local anesthesia.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
