Dysthemia Cured By Taking Ventab And Pramipex. Can I Taper Down The Medicine Under Doctor's Supervision?

My 18 year old son was dianosed with mild Dysthemia 18 months ago and placed on Ventab DXT 50mg and Pramipex 0.375. We relocated a year ago. The prescribing psychiatrist first prescribed the medicine for 6m, told us not to get any behavioral therapy and keeps telling us to continue another 6 months each time we call him. He doesnt even speak to my son or ask us any diagnostic on these calls. My son's condition improved a year ago and he has no symptoms since. We are uncomfortable with this medication, though the doctor is well recommended..Should we just taper down the medicine under another doctors' supervision?

Hi,

If you feel that your son has been well for a year now, you can try tapering off the medicine. But keep a watch for signs of relapse as all mood disorders have a tendency to recur again. Pramipex should be stopped first and Ventab DXT later. Go slow and take at least a few months in tapering off the medicines. Avoid reducing doses at times of stress like exams, as recurrence is more likely at stressful times.

Best wishes.
