Done Total Colectomy. Constipation, Bloating, Weight Gain, Diarrhea. Small Intestine Affected?

I had a total colectomy in 2001, no bag, was in the hospital for 8 days. Things were great until about 6 months ago. I am having some of the same problems again. Constipation, bloating, weight gain, and add to that diarrhea. I have an appointment to see a gastroenterologist. Could my small intestines be affected? I have not heard of small intestines being affected this way.

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

I assume that the colectomy was done because of Ulcerative Colitits. In such case small intestine should be free from this disease. So your symptoms do not seem to be caused by inflammatory bowels disease. More possible is that the small intestine has gotten narrow in some area what leads to partial bowels obstruction. Such obstruction can give symptoms mentioned by you.
Other possibility is that there has been left a very small part of large intestine in the rectal area and this is giving you the symptoms.

You should definitely visit a gastroenterologist.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
