Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My child has been on vyvanse going on 2years. She has been getting nose bleeds that last over half hr. The school nurse has not been able to stop it. Has been transported twice by ambulance. Could the medicine cause nosebleeds. Also besides cool humidfyer for dry heat what else can be done. Thank you.
Vyvanse contains Lisdexamfetamine which is stimulant used in attention deficit hyperactive disorder thereby improves the symptoms such as more focused in activities, decreased activity of fidgeting, pay more attention to the work. Side effects of the drug are headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dry mouth, loss of appetite, etc. But this drug is not the active cause for nose bleed.
Thorough evaluation with blood investigations to rule out any disease helps to confirm the cause. Nose picking is one of the common cause for active bleeding. In ADHD children, who are more active than normal children with fidgeting may be with the habit of nose picking. Discuss with the ENT doctor and Psychiatrist for further evaluation and management.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
