Does Timing Of Taking Medicine Alter Blood Sugar Level?

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here...Hi,my sister is suffering from diabetes(type2)since almost 6yrs.she is also suffering from cerebral palsy.when detected for the 1st time her sugar level was 244(fasting)and 314(pp) and she was given gluconorm sr 500 1tab after dinner.her sugar level came down but was not normal.gradually the dosage of the same medicine was increased to 1mg aftr din.therafter, her sugar level became very low.so,her medicine was changed to metlam sr500mg,30min after bfast.sugar level shot up,dosage of med was increased but timing was kept same,i.e,30min after bfast.now she takes metlam sr 1mg,30min after bfast, her sugar level has again increased to 229(pp).

my question is does the timing of taking the medicine alters the blood sugar level in any way?pls reply

Diabetologist 's  Response
Dear madam i can understand your concern
in my opinion the medication is making your sugar to fluctuate a lot
This kind of fluctuation will increase the chance of complications.
as you rightly said timing of tablet is very important in treating diabetes.
the medications like glimepiride 1 mg should be taken before food so that they will stimulate pancreas and produce insulin before taking food.
medications like metformin work better when they are taken after food.
i suggest to speak with your doctor regarding new medications like sitagliptin and vildagliptin which will not give low sugars and control your sugar very well.
