Does Atorva 40 Mg Need To Be Continued?

My doctor prescribed Atorva 40 mg tablets first for 1 month, then for 3 months, & now again for 3 more months. My lipid is normal now, though 4 months ago cholersterol was 388 MG/DL. Is it necessary to take so high dose for so long period? Atorva 10 mg is not enough?

Hello and thank you for using HCM.I carefully read your question and I understand your concern. I will try to explain you something and give you my opinion.

You should know that cholesterol level depend on what we call modifiabel causes and on genetic basis that's not a modifiabel factor.

On the modifiable causes I can mention dietary style and physical activity. Taking a high fibre diet, avoiding high cholesterol food and regular physical activity to burn calories hepls to reduse cholesterol. But this is only one side.

You can not modify your genes. There are genetic factors that are responsible for the cholesterol uptake, cell membrane receptors patology that can lead to high levels of cholesterol in organism.
This are called familiar dyslipidemia.
In this cases it is essential to take medication.

Your cholesterol level is very very high.it is mandatory to take medications whith high dose.
Your total cholesterol should be below 180 mg / dl.

Starting from this high value, I suppose we are dealing with a genetic problem that would need life long medication.
If you stop it, your cholesterol will rise again.and this is not good.
You should do again a blood analyze to see the reduction after 40 mg of statins and only than decide for the dosage but not stop it.You might need the same dose if the reduction is not enough.

Hope I was helpful.Wish you good health.
Best regards
