Do Soreness And Swelling Along The Jaw Indicate Symptoms Of Mumps?

Hi I am 55 years old, yesterday my jaw became sore and today it is swollen and sore. Feels like the swelling is along my jaw as opposed to the neck. It feels like my gum and inside of my cheek is sore. I have made a dentist appointment for Monday, it does not hurt to chew on my teeth so I was thinking could it be the mumps?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Dear. Mumps is due to infection of parotid gland which is a salivary gland near the ear lobe.
Swelling of the jaw can also occur due to infection of the gums.

Mumps is due to viral infection. Even if one doesnot take any treatment it will subside in one week. Only in very few cases sue to super added bacterial infection one may need antibiotic and further management. Otherwise just pain reducing tablets like paracetamol is enough. You can also give hot fomentation to the site for pain relief.

If it is gum infection you may need to take antibiotics for one week or so.

Kindly consult your doctor if you are not getting better in couple of days.

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
