Diabetic. Sore, Ulcer Below The Anus. No Help From Mupirocin Ointment. Can You Prescribe Any Antibiotics?

I went to the doctor the other day for a sore just below the anus. Doc said "You have an ulceration" and prescribed some Mupirocin Ointment USP, 2%. It took me a couple days to get the prescription and I began to use it. Forward to yesterday - I started having a really spaced out day. I thought it was from lack of sleep which I "have" been incredibly insomniac the past few days. I am 57 and have a few other things wrong with me like Type 2 diabetes along with a bottom of the foot ulcer we've been treating since last May. Also yesterday the Ulceration began to be quite a bit more uncomfortable and I could feel that it had grown in size. Feels sort of like a marble sized bump. I want to use some antibiotics but don't know which ones I should take. Any ideas?

Dear Friend

Diabetics are always at risk of infection.
Question is that the sore you developed is a bacterial infection or a fungal infection.
If it is a fungal , antibiotic would not help. However , since you are saying it has increased in size , it seems to be bacterial.
A clinical diagnosis can be made only by seeing the lesion. So consult your doctor.
I usually prefer to give my diabetic patients Amoxycillin and Cloxacillin antibiotic for this kind of lesion.
Discuss with your doctor.

Hi,

Diabetic ulcers might be dry, wet or infected. Treatment depends upon type of it. I assume that your doctor did diagnose that it is infected. Diabetic ulcers took long time to heal. You need to sleep in lateral positions to avoid pressure on sore. Proper dressing need to be done.
Injectable antibiotics like ceftriaxone and amikacin can be taken after sensitivity test.

Do consider a positive feedback as a credit to my work. Let me know if you have any further questions.
