Developed Hearing Loss After Water In The Ear During Shower. Prescribed Prednisone. Hearing Test Showed Hearing Loss After Medication. Help?
Hi, Around 12:30 am I was taking a shower and it felt like I had water in my left ear (pressure inside the ear) suddenly I developed hearing loss and ringing in my left ear. I went to ER immediately and they prescribed Prednisone 20 mg at the ER and diagnosed me with Meneir's disease and advised me to go to ENT specialist. I went to an ENT specialist and he prescribed 10 mg Prednisone a 15 day supply. I took all of the medicine and have finished, but still have the hearing loss and ringing. I went to the follow up appt and the hearing test was the same results with no improvement. He diagnosed me with a viral infection. He ordered an MRI which showed no ear tumor or other anatomical problems and that he could not do anything else more for me besides giving me a hearing aide for the ringing. Do you have any recommendations or suggestions that would help me with my hearing loss and ringing in my ear??
typical of meaniers disease cann be cause by virus or fluid disturbance in ear there is sudden loss of hearing and it does not come to normal you had right treatment but the loss is nerve loss which donot recover ringing is due to nerve loss you are having right guidence nothing above that tinnitis relaxation exercises can help you if you try
Hi, Thank you for your query As you have the sudden hearing loss, before reach the near diagnosis , I need the Clinical examination report by your ENT specialist mainly of ear with Audiometry (Pure tone audiometry and impedance report) . These are necessary for diagnosis and management.
Thanks for your query and first of all I totally understand your concern as you have had a sudden hearing loss. The treatment of a sudden hearing loss would include steroids as the first line which you have been prescribed. Also, most patients spontaneously resolve in the first month. Besides this, some Specialists do offer High pressure oxygen if the hearing loss is of 1 month or less duration. You could also take antivirals for a week after consulting your doctor. You could ask your ENT specialist about the same, whether these two forms of treatment could be tried in your case. As a long term measure, I would suggest you to avoid exposure to any loud sounds. Avoid any ototoxic medicines ( drugs which cause damage to the ear) Periodically check your hearing levels with an audiometry testing. Reducing the stress levels and noise levels would benefit the ringing in your ear.
I hope you have a speedy recovery and feel free if you have any further questions.
Regards, Dr Vaishali
