Colonoscopy Is Advisable After Perforation Of Colon?
Yes. Two years ago I underwent a standard colonoscopy d/t a positive hemoccult test. The procedure was barely begun and my colon was perforated. Therefore, the colonoscopy was never done. I currently have a negative test for occult blood, but have had some bright blood on the toilet tissue at times as well as times of fecal incontinence, especially after or during exercise or heavy activity. Question: would you advise any further colonoscopy? If so, how long after the perforation which resulted in an open abdominal surgical repair, 8 days in the hospital, and a long recovery. The colon prep is very hard on my system as I have also been told that I probably have IBS. I am in good health otherwise at age 70. I am seeking another opinion. I have discussed this with my PCP, an internist, who knows me well and also more recently with a colo rectal surgeon. Thank You

After reading your symptoms it seems you have on going bleeding from you colon or rectum. My opinion is You need a colonoscopy or at least a sigmoidoscopy to evaluate the cause of Blood on the toilet tissue. It should safe to do a colonoscopy now and the old perforation shouldnt cause any problems.

after a gap of minimum 4-6months of the perforation surgery, one can go ahead with colonoscopy if it is required. You can also ask your doctor to get a 'Virtual Colonoscopy' done where they take a C.T.Scan of the abdomen and a computer software picks up only the colon images from the scan and reconstructs it as a virtual colonoscopy.
