Chronic Cough, Frothy Phlegm, running Nose, Dizzy, Blood Rushing To Head. Quit Smoking. On Mucinex. Problem?

I was smoking consistently for a couple weeks cigars are my favorite the cheap ones mostly black and milds sometimes filtered sometimes not, After about a month I always quit again for awhile because i know its not good for me. Im also about 60 pounds over weight and coming up on my 33rd birthday. This last time I stopped smoking its because i developed a chronic cough about a week ago and I cough up white frothy phlegm and my nose is always running, I always feel like i have to cough and when i do i feel sort of dizzy for a second like all the blood rushed to my head and then im fine after the coughing fit subsides. Mucinex helps but is not eliminating the phlegm and allergies have never effected me this way. Whats wrong with me? also repeated coughing fits tire me out.

hi,
your problem is cough, cough, cough and over weight. You are only 33. Not mentioned your height. You are a chronic smoker, frequently changing the brands. Whether filter, light or in whatever form cigarette is harmful. You have the willingness to quit but you don't have the strong willingness. If you want to quit, do it at one stroke. No slow quitting. You may get some with drawl effects. You must anticipate and face it. Without any supportive measure stop it immediately. you have running nose. Cough may be dry (smoker's cough) or wet or productive like what you have (associated with respiratory infection). The dizziness and feeling of blood rushing to the head is cough syncope (due to increased blood flow to the brain by prolonged forceful cough, Some time produces fainting also). So quit smoking immediately.
You have the main risk factor - obesity - investigate and treat obesity if needed. Have strict control over your intake of food along with jogging, swift walking or mild exercises.
Before too late act now in order to avoid later regret.
Best of luck

ENT Specialist Dr. A.K. Srivastava's  Response
Hello

Thanks for writing to H.C.M. for your query.

I have gone through your query regarding cough with phlegm and watery running nose, you were a smoker and recentaly you had given up this habbit. I am suspecting that you are having chronic respiratory tract infection and along with there will be some element of brobchitis as well due to your previous habbit of smoking.

You are at the age of 33 years, and contineous cold as feel by clear nasal discharge indicates some allergic element as well.

Therefore for you it will be better to consult an ENT specialist for thorough examination and relevent investigations to pin point the diagnosis and accordingly treatment may be advice.

Regards.
