Child Has Lump On Foot, Pain. Applied Ice. What Is This?

Hello,
We took my 6 year old son to the doctor today because of a bump or lump towards the top of the foot. He has complained off and on since December about foot pain and we have always rubbed it.. iced it..tried new shoes. Everything we could think of. We never noticed the bump because it is very hard..bone like and it just didn't occur to me until I rubbed both his feet at the same time, then it was very noticeable. Doctor said he did not believe it was a bone spur. Said our son would probably remember any major trauma of the foot.. sent us for an XRAY and blood work. Should know results tomorrow. He was very curious about any and all types of cancer in our family and mentioned it could be a tumor and of course that not all tumors are cancerous. My question is do you have any other idea of what this could be?
