Cause For Phlegm Or Mucus In The Mouth In Old Age?

My dad who is 93, has been complaining of phlegm or mucus being filled up in his mouth right through the day, this is more in the night, He saw his GP a couple of times and he did prescribe some anti-histamines and nasal sprays etc. but this morning dad was complaining that he was up from 1am last night with loads of mucus/phlegm in his mouth which he had to empty throughout. The phlegm is white in colour. Appreciate if you could outline a plan for either further investigating this issue or some indications of what is causing this and or some treatment options? Many thanks - Dee

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Post nasal drip is a common cause of these symptoms though there are other possible causes. There are different triggers but the most common is allergies. In addition to using the nasal spray and anti histamines, he may want to consider allergy testing to determine what may be provoking this reaction.

Another possible cause is GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). This can cause excess salivation. Some persons may not experience over burning chest pain.
He can consider the use of reflux agents to see if this helps.

I hope this helps
