Can Swallowing Vaginal Fluids Cause Infections?

Dear Dr. A month ago I performed a protected sex with a girl whom I met at a night club. During the intercourse there was once when I took out my penis for a while, thus touching the condom which has some vaginal fluids on it. As i was about to put my penis back into the vagina, I put my fingers to my mouth to get some saliva to lubricate the condom. This means that there could have been some hiv virus(if there were) were transfered to my mouth. My question is, could this lead to me being infeted?

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

I think you don't need to worry about this particular contact.
Firstly, the sexual encounter was a protected one and therefore safe.
Secondly, in this particular scenario not a lot of vaginal fluids would have possibly come into contact with Oral mucosa.
Also, if the oral mucosa is intact i.e there are no sores or breaks in the mucosa, there are negligible chances of Hiv through this particular route.
Moreover, saliva has anti Hiv properties too.
However, I would still suggest you to get tested for HIV just to clear the thought out of your mind. Screening for HIV can be earliest at 1 month and that has to be repeated again after 3 months.
Moreover protected peno-vaginal sex is not a guarantee against all STD's apart from HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. Warts, molluscum and genital herpes can still be acquired.
Therefore if you notice any growth or bumps or erosions, you must get it checked with a specialist.
