Can Doxycyline Head Swelling, Dryness And Cracking Of Lips And Corners Of Mouth?

My 16 yr old daughter has had swollen lips for 5 days now. It started with cracking and dryness at the corners of her mouth. It has now progressed to the inside of her lips being red and raw. We went to see a doctor today at the local immediate care but he didn't really give us a good diagnosis and prescribed Doxycycline. We are still unsure about what the cause is.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi,
I can understand you concern for your daughter. From the description it seems to be vitamin deficiency cheilitis which can lead to swelling, peeling and dryness of lips.

I suggest you to increase her fruits and green leafy intake. Increase her water intake and give her a nutritious diet. Use a antibiotic cream such as fucidin or mupirocin two times in a day for few days over lips. Avoid frequent licking of lips and avoid pulling. Give her multivitamin supplement for a month period.

Take care.
