Can A Higher Dose Of Thyroxine Ensure Weight Gain?

I live in Uk. I had radioactive iodine treatment on my thyroid 9 yrs ago which was successful. I have been on 100mg of thyroxine since the treatment, last year I started to put on a lot of weight (2 stone) which I was really happy about as I was under weight until I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and had treatment ,but over the last year I began to feel really tired , had swollen ankles and hair falling out, had a frozen shoulder and joint pain. Went to docs but he said it was just because I was no longer as active as I used to be and frozen shoulder was because of an injury (which I don't recall ever having). I had my yearly blood test a few months ago and received a call from docs office to say I was to be given an extra 50mg of thyroxine. I still feel tired and have lost all of the weight I was so glad to have put on. Was just wondering if there is any way for me to put on some more weight or to stop losing more weight if I continue with the higher dose of thyroxine.

HI
Thanks for posting your query to Healthcaremagic.

You were treated with radioactive iodine for Hyperthyroidism . Post treatment you were made Hypothyroid and you were given Thyroxine to normalize your TSH levels.

Initial 100mcg was sufficient but with time that dose became inadequate and hence your Hypothyroidism started showing up it's symptoms like WEIGHT GAIN, Tiredness , Hair fall , Swelling of Ankles.

Your Doctors might have tested your TSH and found it to be very high ( s/o Hypothyroidism uncontrolled ) and hence have increased your Thyroxine dose to extra 50mcg.

Once your dose was increased your Hypothyroidism started coming to control and hence some symptoms have started to disappear mainly your weight gain. So know that weight gain that happened was due to Hypothyroidism and is not good .

If you want to gain weight eat more of Non veg food and ask your doctors for a Protein supplements.

Hope you find this information useful.
