Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 32 year old son was recently in a de tox facility. He was prescribed neurotonin : 3, 2, then 1 for 3 weeks. It is making him very sleepy. And now he is experiencing allergy like symptoms and achey feeling. He has suffered with allergies since 9 years old. Can I give him a diphenhydramine 50 mg tablet that I was given for an allergic reaction? Also, he was told that he could not stop the neurotonin abruptly , for fear of seizure. Is that correct?
It's not safe to take diphenhydramine while on Neurontin. Neurontin (Gabapentin) is an anti-epileptic drug commonly prescribed to treat seizures and also to treat neuropathic pain (nerve pain) caused by herpes virus or shingles (herpes zoster).
When used alone each of these drugs can cause drowsiness, confusion, difficulty in concentrating, imbalance, etcetera. Taking diphenhydramine together with Neurontin can increase the risk of drowsiness, confusion, impaired concentration, dryness of mouth, etcetera.
So, it is not safe to give him diphenhydramine as long as he takes Neurontin. An alternative less sedating antihistamine like cetirizine or loratadine may be given for his allergy symptoms. Further, Neurontin should not be stopped abruptly as it may trigger the seizures.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
