Can Amoxycillin Cause Itchy Palms, Redness, Slightly Swollen And Itchy Ears?

Hi, I started a course of Amoxycillin yesterday, having one in morning and one last night with meals. I woke up this morning itching, my palms, my ears are red, slightly swollen and itching? Could I be reacting to the anti biotic? I have never had any allergic reactions to any anti biotics before?

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make suggestions for you as follows:

1. Amoxycillin is one of the most common drugs causing allergic reactions. So usually it is suspected first as a cause of allergic reactions.

2. However, there are other possibilities also: you could have a reaction due to any other drug that you might have taken (for fever, pain, etc) or you could have an allergic reaction to any of the excipients (colors, additives, preservatives, etc) that are part of all drug formulations.

3. Sometimes, some if the infections have itchy rash as a part of illness, so may be your rash was the part of the natural course of illness.

4. Whatever the cause may be, I would suggest you not to worry about it at present and take an antihistamine like cetirizine or levocetirizine for 2-3 days and apply calamine lotion over it.

5. Please inform about your itchy rash to your doctor so he can review all your medications and may decide what it was that caused your reaction. Depending upon his judgment, he may advise you to stop some particular drug. Also, allergy testing is available for some of the drugs to confirm any drug allergy, if you have.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish you the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
