Can 50 Mg Of Tramadol Cause A Person To Sleep Continuously And Disable His Functions?

My husband is waiting for knee replacement on the 19/2/14 he is 76 years old and has been very active up till December. He has been given Tramadol arrow 50 mg: He is completely unable to function sleeping continuously, my concern is that he is not even able to come out of this state, just not in any state of mind to even eat.
