Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The description suggests that your Dad is having LUMBAR DISC DISEASE with RADICULOPATHY.

The initial management of this problem would be conservative by following means-

* should avoid lifting heavy weights
* should avoid forward bending activities
* should use a lumbosacral back support
* Intermittent pelvic traction to cause regression of protruded discs
* Obese patients should maintain optimum body weight
* Physiotherapy to strengthen your back muscles. Physiotherapy has to be done only after the acute pain has subsided.
* Judicious use of analgesics and muscle relaxants.

If the above measures fail to resolve the pain, then surgical decompression may be needed.

But as your father is both HYPERTENSIVE & DIABETIC, complications during and after the surgery will be a bit higher. So you have to accept that risk.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello and Welcome to HCM,
Thanks for writing to us.
These symptoms are part of lumbar disc degeneration with PIVD where the nerves get compressed by the protruded disc.
There are several treatment modalities with medicines, physiotherapy and with injections in the back called epidural injections and root/facet blocks.
If you dont get better with these treatment ,I suggest you undergo surgery, by which the nerves are decompressed by removing the protruded disc (discectomy), which would significantly improve your symptoms

Hope this helps you.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.
Dr Saurabh Gupta.
