Are Symptoms Such As Cold, Cough And Lump Like Sensation In Throat Be A Result Of Smoking?

Hi i am 26 years of age. i ve been smoking for 7years usually 4-5 cigs a day. Recently i ve been diagnosed with bronchitis and cold cough and its been a week since the treatment is finished.Though the xrays and PFT tests were normal. Due to this incident i ve quit smoking and its been like 4 weeks.. But i still experience a lump like feeling in my throat. I m constantly trying to clear my throat and cough up clear mucus. I ve been spitting a lot. Also when i exhale forcefully i m experiencing a mild wheeze. Are these withdrawal symptoms or is there something i need to worry about

Hello dear,
After going through your history, I believe you have some genuine concern and I will try to help you out of this situation.

The lump in your throat as per my expertise is due to reflux of acid from your stomach to the throat for which you have been given the particular medications you mentioned. H/O smoking, stress, faulty food habits also add onto this situation.

Normally there is a valve at the junction of food pipe and stomach which prevent reflux, but factors like stress, excess smoking or consumption of coffee, tea, alcohol and many other factors lead to weakening of the valve which leads to reflux and the food pipe and throat gets burned repeatedly. Thus the area is not healing normally and this gives a sense of lump in throat. This takes a long time to heal and requires patience. Spitting or clearing the throat repeatedly will not improve the condition.

In my clinic so to deal with this condition, I advise my clients life style modification as well as medication.
Life style modifications include:
1.Weak up early and have 1 litre of Luke warm water ( Seems difficult, but will be in habit in a week)
2.Avoid coffee, tea, alcohol, smoking
3.Avoid spicy and oily foods
4. Take frequent small meals ( While eating the more the stomach distends, the more the acid secreted).
5. Have a brisk walk of 15 minutes after meals, walk after dinner is a must.
6. Very importantly, maintain a gap of 2 hours between dinner and going to bed.

If you follow this within one month all your symptom of esophagitis will vanish. If you continue, never such situation will arise.

Now the medication part, I advise my clients proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazol for a couple of weeks along with Lycopene capsules for better healing.

I hope I could solve your query. Please do not hesitate to clarify more doubts for the same situation.

Thank you for the way you are in my life.
