Are Croupy Cough And Low Grade Fever Signs Of Abscess Shrinking?

My son was hospitalized for 5 days for retropharyngeal abscess and treated intravenously with antibiotics and then given oral antibiotics for 7 days once released from hospital. He has started to get a croupy cough again with a very low grade temp. How do I know if his abscess has shrunk?
