74 Years. Hypoglycemia. Not Following Proper Diet, On Insulin. Not Taking Insulin For Lowered Sugar Level Advised?
My father Law is 74 diabetic and has in the past 4 days had 2 episodes of hypoglycemia - one after taking his insulin and not eating and the 2nd shortly after taking insulin but having eaten a bit before. the first episode required an emergency call as he had no idea what was gong on - his sugar level was 40. The 2nd episode did not get as bad as he realized what was happening before it we t too far. he was out shopping and didn't have anything to check his sugar - he drank some soda and ate candy and felt better in about 45 minutes. After a call to his dr today and the dr advising to lower his insulin - without even seeing him! he has decided he will probably not take his insulin at all anymore so that he does not experience this again ( of course he did not tell his dr this) his dr also does not know that he does not watch what he eats, goes long periods of time without food and then eats way too much. I am at a loss - he will not listen and refuses to be honest with his dr - I am afraid for him and for others on the road when he is driving especially - any suggestions ?

74 Years. Hypoglycemia. Not Following Proper Diet, On Insulin. Not Taking Insulin For Lowered Sugar Level Advised?
Hello, Yous father in law is an elderly diabetic. The episodes of hypoglycemia are basically due to mismanagement of insulin therapy and eating pattern. Unless the patient is willing cooperating with the treating physician and the caregivers it is very difficult to control the diabetes. Hypoglycemia should be taken seriously because persistent hypoglycemia may be life threatening at times. Patient education about the disease has to be stressed here for effective management.
