4 Year Old Child, Severe Ear Pain After Spending Whole Day In Swimming Pool. Treatment?
Dear Dr. Sumit Bhatti,
My doughter is 4 years old and spent the whole day in a swimming pool jumping in the water and an hour ago just before going to bed, she started crying because of the sever ear pain. She can't sleep because of the pain and I was wondering what would be the best thing to do? Thanks in advance for your help.
I suppose that she might have a condition called swimmers ear , its due to any infection in the ear canal and it is called as otitis externa . It happens when bacteria grow in the skin of the ear canal, which is a path to the eardrum. some times kids may also have infection of the middle part of the ear that is beyond the ear drum on prolonged swimming .
its always better to examine her ear before starting the treatment as both conditions differ in treatment. swimmers ear usually responds well to antibiotic ear drops like ofloxacin ear drops used externally in the ear canal. But any infection of the middle ear requires antibiotic syrup or tablets.
So better consult a ENT specialist or a pediatrician before starting treatment. If she has severe pain you can give her paracetamol 250 mg tablet as single dose for her pain relief till you get your appointment.
Thank you for your consultation in healthcare magic.
