20 Month Old Son, Loose Motion, Green Stool, Loss Of Appetite. Taking Medication. Checking For Lactose Intolerance. Alternate Food?

Hi, my 20 month old son has lose motions since 3 days and is the color of the stool is mucus type green or very dark , we did consult a doctor as his regular doc is not in town .. He has been put on medication ( oral supp and antibiotic ) and 2nd doze is given today , he is not showing improvement signs and has done poo 3 times in last 8 hours after medication , I wanted to know how much time it takes a baby to recover from such issues as he has lost his appetite an does not want to eat anything also. We have been asked to stop milk feed too as the baby might have lactose intolerance as of now , please suggest what to do and is there any alternative food we can give as of now So that he gains energy

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

It takes 3 to 5 days for the loose stools to come down and the appetite may improve within 1 week.

The mainstay of treatment is to hydrate the child by giving sips of oral rehydration solutions such as Pedialyte.

Oral probiotic is suggested to restore the healthy gut flora.

Antibiotic to be given in prescribed dose with the doctor advise.

Coming to diet, you can give rice, daal, curd rice.

Consult the doctor for physical examination and for medication.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Pediatrician Dr. Kadhirselvan Periasamy's  Response
Hi i am Dr.kadhir,

At first lactose intolerance is common only in the first year of life, it is unusual that it leads to stools with mucous. The most important sign is acidic stools leading to redness and irritation around the anus. The stools will be watery or semisolid typically after 2 to 3 hours of milk or milk related feeds. so if it does not fit in this it is better to continue milk and observe.

Next it is important to decide on the treatment based on,

whether watery ?
whether blood or mucous in stools with pain during passing stools?
How is he doing (that is he looks dehydrated and tired) ?
Passing less amount of urine? vomiting?

If you think he fits in any of the above take him to a pediatric hospital. If he is doing better than Diarrhea is better treated with good diet, oral re hydration solution , zinc syrup and antibiotics if needed. The best diet would be curd rice, home made kanchi (starch) or idly with adequate vegetables .

Thank you for the consultation in health care magic.
