Question: ive had a little bump on my penis for more than a month and it doenst seem to go away, I have had a high risk sex about 18 months ago and since then I have had 3 STD tests (HIV rapid test, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea) done 3, 6, 9 months after the incident and results are all negative. ive visited some health clinic and the registered nurses said they do not find anything concerning about the bump and it should be gone away within weeks and I have used hydrocortisone Cream to treat it but it does not seem to get better.

Brief Answer:
Possibly the lump is a wart but following it in time is necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and reviewed the uploaded pictures.

Due to the past history of unprotected intercourse, the most likely cause of a lump in the genital are is a wart due to HPV infection. There are no approved tests to diagnose HPV in men so the best way to make sure of the diagnosis is to rule out other causes and watch the lesion in time. HPV does not have specific treatment and if not bothersome the lesions do not necessarily need to be removed.

You mentioned you have done checks for STDs, I did not notice there tests for syphilis. Very likely you have had this test as well as it is routinely done when STDs are suspected but in case you have not had this test it is best to have it done as syphilis can cause genital warts as well. In the case of syphilis, specific treatment with antibiotics is needed.

If the tests for syphilis come out negative (normal) then you will need to just watch the lesion in time, as long as it causes no discomfort. If the lump is getting bigger you will need another medical examination because changes with time might help clarify the diagnosis.

I would recommend you to not continue using hydrocortisone cream, especially because it did not help with the lump and steroids are not recommended to be used for a long time in that area.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

to clarity, I have had protected sex with a person whose STD status is unknown. I have visited several health clinic and have it checked by registered nurses and both of them claim that they %E2%80%9Ccannnot really see anything and unnoticeable%E2%80%9D.

the bump is way more obvious when the area is dry, also, i have been having eczema for many years, is it possible that it is also eczema because it is kind of itchy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,

Thank you for the reply and the additional information.

Eczema may cause genital lesions but I would expect the lesion to affect the skin and not the glans because the glans is covered by mucosa and not skin. On the other hand the hydrocortisone cream would have helped if it was eczema.

So the best way for the moment is to just observe it in the coming weeks and see if it grows or not.
If the lesion grows then it might be easier to understand the nature of it as for the moment the lesion is so small.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
