Brief Answer:
Probable viral syndrome which will subside in about 10 days

Detailed Answer:
Good evening and thank you for your question.

I've read your question along with the symptoms I've also read a previous question answered by Dr. Dede where you outlined the same symptoms and I concur with her opinion in that what you describe is most consistent with a viral syndrome that is being passed around your family.

Although fevers of 102.5 are not the most common temperatures one thinks of with viruses this is not entirely unexpected. Average febrile episodes probably vary between 99-101. You did mention a temperature of 103 to Dr. Dede but my sense is that you were possibly ROUNDING UP the temperature you provided to me as your maximum of 102.5. Now, 103 is actually considered quite a bit higher than 102.5 from a physician's point of view so it is not the same to ROUND UP to a the next higher number as you might when talking about money or anything else so just for future reference it is best to report temperatures and fevers read by a thermometer or other measuring device to the nearest 1/10th of a degree and to simply report THAT number as opposed to rounding up or down.

At any rate your symptoms are definitely more of a viral nature than bacterial since you do not have any FOCAL COMPLAINTS such as a sore strep like throat or a severe earache with discharge or clogged sinuses with purulent drainages, etc.

Conservative use of medications such as paracetamol are fine to use according labeling instructions but don't overdo it since this can be unhealthy for the liver if too many pills are taken at a time. CLEAR FLUID HYDRATION is really the very best thing you and your family can drink to also control fevers and volume status since the higher temperatures will cause insensible water losses to be greater and thererfore, things such as PASSING OUT or dizzy spells can be more likely if a person doesn't eat or drink enough. Avoid anything caffeinated, no soda pop, no coffee, no tea.

Do not use energy drinks as these can cause water losses to increase and the excessive caffeine will augment metabolism without benefit. You should be active but also paying attention to resting when necessary during the day and certainly getting a full night's sleep.

You can also try cold compresses across the eyes and forehead which will make the eyes feel better. Your symptoms are expected to subside in about 7-10 days from time of onset although it is not unheard of for such syndromes to continue for up to 2-3 weeks. I would also promote and advocate HIGH DOSE VITAMIN C (2500-3000 mg. daily) for the next 2 weeks and then, beyond that a good dose of at least 1000-1500mg. daily is healthy to supplement your diet which you may wish to increase in terms of fruits for even higher doses of natural Vitamin C.

It is believed by some experts that Vitamin C in high daily doses can boost and aid the IMMUNE SYSTEM in bolstering up defenses against viral syndromes. Also, in my experience with my patients I have found that adding supplemental zinc during down times in addition to the vitamin C seems to improve the action of the vitamin C.

If I've provided useful or helpful information could you do me a HUGE favor by CLOSING THE QUERY and taking a moment to provide a few kind words of feedback, perhaps even stamping the consult with a 5 STAR rating if you feel so inclined?

I'm very interested in being kept in the loop with how things progress so please drop me a line whenever you seem to be turning the corner or if you end up getting some testing done such as bloodwork or urine if things don't seem to be getting better and you end up seeing your doctor. I'm happy to give you opinions on those issues as well.

Brief Answer:
Likely part of viral syndrome

Detailed Answer:
This is very good news that you've turned a bit of a corner.

The problem you mention sounds to be on the mend. The GI symptoms of gassiness or felling bloated may be part of this same syndrome in which case You should try and eat normally or at least maintain good HYDRATION until you fully recuperate in the next few days....or if the symptoms you mention are symptoms that were there in the past (before all this started) and perhaps are just a bit exacerbated you may wish to see your regular doctor and see if you are showed signs and symptoms of a GI viral upset that could benefit from something such as a PROTON PUMP INHIBITOR or other type of ANTACID. Also, there are specific ANTI-GAS agents that can sometimes help but I hesitate making any specific recommendations since I've not had the benefit of examining you personally.

My sense is that if you feel hungry and are able to tolerate some food without becoming terribly uncomfortable with gas and bloating that you will recover quite satisfactorily over the course of the next few days. Don't forget to keep your HYDRATION STATUS up to snuff.

I would keep MEDICINE TO A MINIMUM at this point especially if you are feeling better than yesterday. If you start taking unnecessary medicine you could trip off worsening symptoms due to adverse reactions to the medications being taken or other reasons.
