Hello, I Have One Lymph Node That Is Slightly Swollen

Posted on Wed, 8 May 2019
Question: hello, I have one lymph node that is slightly swollen in the left side of my neck under my jaw. About 3 weeks ago I had some sort of extreme stomach virus and I was on the hospital but that went away and one of my lymph nodes became swollen about a week after that. It has almost been 3 weeks and I noticed it may have gone down a little bit but it is still slightly bigger than the other. I can move the lymph node around and I was just wondering if this is any sign of lymphoma?

Brief Answer:
post infection inflammatory swelling of node. not lymphoma.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* As per my surgical experience, the lymph node enlargement is normal physiologic
response of the human body against any sort of infection, usually viral or bacterial.

* The possibility of lymphoma does not sound till far here because of the history and
presentation ; as lymphoma grows in size, multiple in number with other systemic
features in majority of the instances.

Kindly provide me further details so that I can answer your query completely.

1. The lymph node enlargement was noticed since the onset of stomach condition ?
2. Associated signs of upper respiratory infection as cough, running nose, fever were
present at that time ?
3. Treatment details if possible.

Awaiting for your response.
Regards.

Thankyou very much for the response.

The lymph node swelling seemed to happen during my recovery from the stomach condition, no fever or coughing was present because & the hospital thought it was a stomach virus such as the stomach flu. The only symptoms I had with the stomach flu was nausea, vomiting and fatigue. The lymph node swelling may have happened during the stomach condition but I was too sick to possibly notice it.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for the relevant details.

* The current condition of lymph node enlargement sounds non specific enlargement due
to viral infection most likely.

* There is no active management required at this stage, just keep observation over the
size of the same.

* Maintain hydration with plenty of liquids and consume balanced nutritious diet to
combat best against any sort of immune compromise.

* Avoid smoking if involved to avoid any flare up of upper respiratory pathogen.

Wish you best recovery.
Regards.
