What Is The Cause And Treatment For Bacterial Vaginosis?

Posted on Tue, 17 Feb 2015
Question: I have had Bacterial vaginosis for 5 months. I've taken antibiotics twice and nothing has worked I still have symptoms . I am not permiscuous , I've had the same partner for 4 years. Since the antibiotics have not worked for me I've tried home remedies such as garlic , yogurt, Apple cider vinegar douche and just tried hydrogen peroxide diluted with water as a douche. It worked for the discharge but I did it for a few days and I have cramps and light spotting. I've read that BV untreated can cause PID. And cramping a bleeding are some symptoms of PID. I am worried I do not want any permanent damage . Should I go to the ER ?

Brief Answer:
Don't worry, chances of PID are very very low.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing..
I understand your concern..

I think you are over concerned about your infection.. I would suggest to use betadiene vaginal tablets for 7 days.. Do not douch the vagina.. Keep the area clean and dry.. Also treat the partner prior to next intercourse.. Use v wash instead of soap to clean the gentalia as it kills the normal bacteria that are supposed to live there.

Since you were treated for infection already, there is less chance of PID.. Bleeding and cramping can be due excessive vaginal douching..

You can get a scan to see for any signs of PID but it is not emergency..

Hope I have answered your query.. Feel free to ask any doubts.. Good day..

I thought it was only necessary to treat a female and not a male. My partner is male. What should be be treated with ?
