What Does Yellowish Discharge After Hysterectomy Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Sep 2016
Question: I had a hysterectomy on July 11, 2016. All went well during the surgery. I went back to work on August 22nd. I am high school teacher with loads of stress. At my 5 week check up my surgeon said "all healed nicely. You can return to normal activities at 6 weeks"--although he literally only looked inside me for one second. On August 22nd (the day I returned to work) I had some really watery discharge, and then it went away. For the past 6 days or so, I have had some light yellow discharge that doesn't itch or burn. It is also odorless. I only shows light yellow on a panty liner. On the vagina itself it appears white. I used a tampon to look at it and it did appear light yellow and white on it. I am concearned because it seems like there is much more of it than I remember before my surgery. I no longer have a cervix and have no idea what to expect to see now with my cycle when it comes to discharge (I still have my ovaries.) I read that until my vaginal cuff'stitches sutures dissolve entirely, I may see more yellowish discharge. He didn't say my sutures were entirely dissolved at my appointment. I am just wondering if this is something I should be seen about or if it might be attributed to the healing process. I purchased an otc vaginal ph kit yesterday, and it showed "negative" for abnormal ph. I have been intimate with my boyfriend without a condom twice since XXXXXXX as I can now no longer get pregnant. Neither of us have had sex with anyone else in 2+ years. Although he did say he has not had an std test before we met. Do you think this is stress or hormone related fluctuations perhaps? My app says I would have started my period Sept 10. Please let me know if you need any more information.

Brief Answer:
A normal discharge after hysterectomy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The mild yellowish discharge that you have is normal after removal of the uterus. This discharge takes 3-4 months to gradually decrease. Standing for long hours and an increase in activity might have caused an increase in the discharge. There is nothing to worry. Just wait and let the discharge decrease on its own. Do avoid having sex for next two months till the discharge decreases completely.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Why should I not have sex for 8 more weeks ? My surgeon said I could resume all sexual activities after 6 weeks time.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Chances of infection are more.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Since you have a watery discharge and the stitches have not completely dissolved, the chances of getting an infection are more in your case. Just to be on a safer side it is better to avoid having sex.
Hope my answer is helpful.
