What Does This Endoscopy Test Result Indicate?
Question: I have GERD/Moderate Hiatal Hernia and I had an Endoscopy in NYC yesterday. I had my first Endoscopy 8 years ago and the Biopsies of the tissues removed during the Endoscopy revealed no Barrett's. My Endoscopy yesterday revealed a "Mildly Irregular Z Line". Awaiting the Biopsy Results. Is it possible that just GERD caused the "Mildly Irregular Z Line" and that the Mild Irregularity is not attributable to Barrett's?

Barretts esophagus is nonreversible condition. Once it appears, you have it for the rest of your life.
As you have it already diagnosed, it is very probable that irregular Z line is caused by Barretts esophagus. Of course, we can not be sure about that. That is why we collect the sample and send it to pathologist. He is able to answer this question.
But in your case, I would not count that this is not due to Barretts.

Thank you but I think you misunderstood. My Biopsies eight years ago revealed NO Barrett's. My Endoscopy Yesterday reflected a "Mildly Irregular Z Line". Awaiting the Biopsy Results. Thus, I have NEVER been Diagnosed with Barrett's - only GERD/Hiatal Hernia. Thus, is it possible that just GERD caused the "Mildly Irregular Z Line" and that the Mild Irregularity is not attributable to Barrett's?

In such case, quite often irregular Z line is just due to GERD. Barretts esophagus can not be diagnosed at this point. And it is possible that you don't have it. Let say the chance is 50%. So you need to wait for the biopsy result.

Thanks very much. My Doctor initially told me that it was a 50% chance of Barrett's but then he mentioned a lower % so perhaps he was basing that lower % on other endoscopic findings in addition to the mildly irregular z line that he discovered. Does the degree of the irregularity - mild, moderate, large, etc. -- tilt the scales from 50/50 to a lesser or greater percentage?
