What Does The Following Stool Analysis Result Indicate?
I recently had a stool analysis but i've only got the results and no idea what the actual results mean. For example my anaerobic bacteria looks really low but I dont know if thats good, bad or neither! My PH stool seems high at 8 too.
Have attached picture links. My results are the numbers on the left, the ones on the right are the reference range.
If you could take a look and give me any advice or any problems I may have here that would be brilliant. Thank you.

E.coli infection detected
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
Thanks for your query.
I have gone through the reports of stool analysis as mentioned in your post. However, you have not mentioned about your case history and the need for stool. This leads me to the assumption that you are suffering from diarrhea and has not started any medications yet.
Following points can be noted from the investigation reports:
A. There is an increase in count of E.coli in the stool.
E.coli is a common causative agent of diarrhea.
Management involves a course of antibiotics like Ofloxacin OR based on culture & sensitivity reports.
In addition, fluid and electrolyte balance needs to be maintained with the help of O.R.S (Oral Rehydration Solution).
B. Anaerobic bacteria such as Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus, etc. form a part of the intestinal microflora or ‘good bacteria’.
They are helpful in food absorption, metabolism, synthesizing certain vitamins as well as protect the Gastrointestinal tract against invasion from harmful bacteria.
A decrease in their level is not considered good.
It can be replenished with the help of Probiotics or Lactobacillus preparations.
C. Increased pH of 8 is indicative of alkaline nature of stool.
Though it is not used as a diagnostic modality, increased pH is usually seen in inflammation in the intestine or prolonged antibiotic use.
D. Secretory IgA forms a part of the defense mechanism of the Gastrointestinal mucosa as well as helps in growth of ‘good bacteria’.
Decreased level of Secretory IgA (as reported in the stool analysis) indicates that the mucosal immune system is weakened and hence it cannot tackle the invading pathogens.
This will make you more susceptible to inflammation/ infection of the Gastrointestinal tract.
E. Other values are within normal limits.
However, the stool analysis reports need to be correlated with clinical examination.
So, kindly consult your caring Doctor/ Gastroenterologist for a proper clinical examination and further management.
Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
