default
Posted on Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Question: Hi,
I recently got the liver function test and renal function test done and found that the following are out of normal range :
SGPT = 56 (normal 4 - 44)
GGT = 123 (normal 16 - 73)
Albumin = 5 (normal 3.5 - 5)
Blood Urea = 18 (normal 19 - 43)
Apart form the above all other values are within the range. Please note that I consume alcohol around 4 to 5 times in a week.
Question: Should I completely stop drinking alcohol ? Should I start taking any medication ?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Altered liver function

Detailed Answer:
Sir!

Many thanks for the query.
I have gone through your query and could grasp its contents.
You have not mentioned why you had got your LFT and renal functions tested.
The renal function looks alright.
The GGTP is increased three times normal and it is most likely due to alcohol consumption.
Abstinence from alcohol will quickly normalize this level. SGPT is only marginally increased and it is not a thing of worry.
No medication is required as well.
Get well soon .

This April there was a routine health check in my company. Then also SGPT was bit high so they advised me to get the test done again after 6 months. So got it done again now.

Should I stop drinking completely or for some time period? Should I repeat the LFT again after some duration ? How severe is my problem ?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Repeat after 6 months.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX

Avoiding alcohol completely is any day desirable as your liver seems to be getting affected by alcohol intake. You can repeat LFT after 6 months. The problem is not very severe and your GGTP will come back to normal once intake of alcohol is suspended.
