What Does The Following MRI Test Report Indicate?

Posted on Fri, 20 Feb 2015
Question: I'm confused. I had a stroke last week and one two months ago. The one two months ago was the right side of the occipital lobe. According to the MRI report - last week's was to the right side of the thalamus. However, when I went to my neurologist today he said when he read the report that they may have been referring to the stroke of two months ago since both regions are in the same area of the brain. He agrees I had a second stroke but it may have been a TIA or made no noticeable damage. This does not make sense to me. Is the occipital lobe and the thalamus in the same area of the brain?

Brief Answer:
Occipital lobe and thalamus are different areas.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Occipital lobe and thalamus are two different areas anatomically and functionally of brain.

MRI if done correctly should give the exact location and the age of brain stroke.

A transient ischemic attack usually doesn't result in definite damage of brain and doesn't reflect on MRI results.

If you had a TIA or a stroke this is evaluated by clinical and neurological examination correlated with MRI findings.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Brief Answer:
Carotid arteries should be evaluated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for asking back.

Other tests needed to assess cardiovascular origin of stroke are carotid ultrasound and angio CT of aortic arch and cervical vessels to evaluate hemodynamic cause of stroke and cervical vessels narrowing or malformed.

Hope this helps. Wishing you good health.

They have done the ultrasound on the carotid and it was good but no angio ct has been done yet. Can you tell me what an angio CT is?

Brief Answer:
Angio CT to assess blood vessels.

Detailed Answer:
A angio CT scan uses intravenous contrast and computerized reconstruction to visualize blood vessels ( arteries) for narrowing, malformation, dissection etc.

Hope this helps.
