Posted on Mon, 22 May 2017
Question: I recently noticed a small amount of blood in my stool when going the toilet, I'm not sure if there is a slight tear, at the time it may have been forced, after that I had no blood present the next few times i went to the toilet. Today I have been and it's present, so slightly concerned, any information would be helpful. I'm 25.

Brief Answer:
hemorrhoids probably

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

blood in the stool always requires investigation, so visiting a gastroenterologist or your primary care physician is advised. In most cases of young healthy individuals without any significant family history of intestinal disorders, blood in the stool is caused by benign causes like hemorrhoids. This is particularly so if the blood looks like if it had been spilled over the stool and sometimes it's present in the toilet paper. If it's mixed with the stool and formed a homogeneous mixture then another cause will have to be considered.

Colonoscopy is the best way to diagnose the cause.

Hemorrhoids usually occur in constipated individuals. To relieve constipation (and help with hemorrhoids) the following measures have to be taken:
- drinking enough water
- eating fiber
- increasing your physical activity
- try to adopt a 'toilet schedule' that is to visit the toilet at regular times every day and try to move your bowels (even if you don't feel like you need to).

I hope you find my comments helpful!
Kind Regards!
