On ultrasound, the kidney cortex (outer portion of kidney) and medulla (inner portion of kidney) can be differentiated due to variability in tissue architecture.

In chronic diseases like diabetes mellitus or hypertension, tissue changes with reduction of renal function can make appearance of both cortex and medulla as almost similar zones. If we are still able to appreciate partially, we call it partial loss of corticomedullary differentiation.

Controlling the underlying cause of renal damage is the treatment of choice.
