What Does My Ultrasound Scan Report Indicate?

Posted on Wed, 25 Nov 2015
Question: Hi. I have a follow-up ultrasound this Friday. My story is as follows . I had a transvaginal ultrasound back in the middle of August due to some bloating, fullness , etc.. I was told all was fine. I also had an abdominal ultrasound , all

Was fine . My symptoms went away after about 3 weeks. ( gastro though some sort of bug that causes gastritis ). Come middle of Septmeber, I began to have lower abdominal issues, diarrhea , urgency( of stools ). My gastroenterologist said to have a ct scan ( had had a colonoscopy 20 months ago and all was fine) . So the Ct scan ( done September 24, 6 weeks after ultrasound ) showed I had a possible multiloculated right Ovarian cyst( nothing else ) . My regular doctor said to see my gyn . Of course I was surprised that a cyst was there as I was told everything was fine after ultrasound In August . Saw my gyn and she said I had a baby cyst ( one on each ovary ) back in August . The one I the left must have dissolved . Anyway. She said she believes it

Is a hemogrraphic cyst and had me follow up in 5 weeks .( this Friday ). As time has gotten closer , I have become more nervous . She has told me repeatedly if she was concerned of malignancy , she would not have had me wait . Can the type of cyst been seen clearly even when it is a baby cyst ( I understand that the type of cyst can not be seen with 100%) accuracy , but I guess I want to get a sense . I have had no pain . My September period was different , but October 's period was normal. I am 47 btw..

My gyn did not want to do 125

Test because she knows of possible false positives and did not want to increase my anxiety . I have been taking apple code vinegar,'just started applying castor oil and am seeing an acupuncturist . With all of those other tests , would anything else be out of order if there was a chance of malignancy ? would the ct scan have seen anything else if malignant? Is that a large cyst? WOuld i be able to feel any changes if it was getting larger?(I have not had any symptoms except for irregular period back in September). Is there any way I can feel for the cysts internally?(I know most likely not). I am in constant need of reassurance. I am told a benign cyst can change to a malignant one ...is that really so???Would a hemogrrahic one change like that?? thanks.

Brief Answer:
Further investigations should be done

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Multiloculated ovarian cyst can be haemorrhagic ovarian cyst or a malignant ovarian tumour.
CA 125 is positive in many conditions apart from malignancy, but once such a finding is present in CT scan , CA 125 should be done for proper work up.
Moreover, you should get a doppler ultrasound to assess the blood supply to the cyst, as it differentiates a hemorrhagic cyst from malignant tumor.
CT scan can also show fluid in the abdomen, liver metastasis in advanced cases of ovarian malignancy.
A ovarian cyst more than 5 cm is comsidered large.
No, you will not be anle to perceive slight enlargement of the cyst.
No, you cannot feel the cyst internally by yourself.
Yes, a benign cyst can change into malignat, but in very rare cases (less than 1%).
No, the hemorrhagic cyst do not changes into a malignant tumor.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.

I had the original transvaginal ultrasound which was how my dr. said it was most likely a hemorrhagic cyst . I also had an abdominal ct scan. No other issues were found(fluid, liver). I am having a regular follow up ultrasound on Friday. What is the difference with a doppler ultrasound? If my doctor feels based on ultrasound it is a hemogrrahpic cyst and said she was not concerned and emphasized that if she was worried, she would have it removed, should I feel confident in that way. So if it is a hemogrraphic cyst, it will not change then?? The actual size on the ct scan was 4.7x2.8 cm in size( and said "possible" multiclocualted). Anyway, looking for reassurance. Feeling like I am following the right protocol. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Normal protocol

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
It is most probable that your doctor had done doppler ultrasound to assess the cyst and that is why, she is so assured of it being a hemorrhagic cyst.
Doppler ultrasound is just done as the normal ultrasound with a function to assess the blood flow to the area of interest.
Your doctor is following the right protocol if she is doing regular follow up ultrasounds.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
