What Does My Thyroid Function Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Aug 2017
Question: Hi, I have taken 0.25 of synthroid for 30 years due to a thyroid nodule which my endocrinologist XXXXXXX could become cancerous. In the past several year years I have experienced hair thinning and a few bald spots. Also my doctor now tells me I can go off the sunthroid because they have found that very few nodules caus thinning. When I tried stopping the drug I had problems with sleepiness so I take it every other day. My questions are could the synthroid itself have eventually caused hairloss and ould stopping it cuse hair loss. With once evry other day my thyroid levels test normal, but I am very concerned about the air loss. What is your opinion?

Brief Answer:
About hair loss;

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
I have gone carefully through your concern.
If the thyroid function (TSH) is normal with or without synthroid the thyroid can not be the cause of the hair loss.
The thyroid function should be altered to cause hair loss.
So in your case thyroid can not be accused.
Synthroid is not suggested any more to treat thyroid nodules if the thyroid function is within the normal ranges. Even though the dose you are taking is low ( 25 mcg every 2 days), it is better not to take it if there is no need for it.
You should see a dermatologist who will examine in details the type of hair loss ( generalized or areata) and will probably suggest further hormonal exams or endocrinological visit depending on it.
Hope i have been helpful.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
