Doctor's reply to your question above... Brief Answer:
It may take a few more days for the stool frequency to come down

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details provided by you. In most cases, loose motions in children is caused due to a virus called rotavirus where antibiotics are ineffective. But let me assure that passing stool 10 times a day can be normal in infants and I would not really worry if your child passes stool 9 times a day. All you need to do is to give ORS or Pedialyte to replenish the lost water and salts. Unless the child grows lethargic, I would not get concerned.

Oflox 100 is an antibiotic. When you have started it, please complete the course of 5 days. The loose motions are not likely to stop all of a sudden. It may still take 3-5 days (from the onset) to stop. The other medicines are proper and please continue them.

Be patient. Give ORS and the medicines. It would soon be fine.

Hope that helps.

Doctor's reply to your question above... Brief Answer:
Get a stool occult blood test done

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

The loose motions can continue for a while and it would not bother me. But what bothers me is the reddish colour of the stools. I would insist you to get a occult blood test of stool done along with a routine microscopy.

Please continue the ORS. If the amount of fluid intake is more than the amount of fluid lost, there should be no cause to worry about.

Doctor's reply to your question above... Brief Answer:
Enterogermina can be continued

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back again.

Enterogermina contains beneficial bacteria and can be continued for a few more days.

For the second baby, I would suggest use of the same medicines except for Oflox. Also give ORS. I hope the second one is a twin. You may give the same doses if the weight is close.

Hope that helps.

Brief Answer:
Seems to be a simple viral infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

I have carefully gone through the full details including the stool reports. The reports indicate that there is no blood in the stool and neither does it indicate that there is any bacterial infection. So, basically it confirms my previous suspicion of a viral infection (rotavirus). Antibiotics are not required. All you need to do is to give ORS. Do not bother about the frequency of passage of stools. If the replenishment of fluids through ORS is equal to or more than the amount of salt and water lost through stool, dehydration will not occur. The stool frequency may take some time to come down. You need not worry. Continue the medicines as directed.

Hold cow milk for now. Give some low lactose or lactose free formula like Lolac or Zerolac. You may give plenty of curd however.
