What Does My Pap Smear Test Report Indicate?
Question: Could you please explain to me the following findings of my pap smear? How serious are they? Do they indicate the presence of HPV virus?

Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. The pap report you have mentioned is suggestive of ASCUS which is atypical squamous cells of unknown significance, along with infection of the cervix. This means that the cervix has some changes in its epithelium, which is not clearly cancerous, however further examination by colposcopy and HPV testing should be done to confirm the cause.
ASCUS is not serious condition, if colposcopy and HPV testing is normal.
I would suggest you to get your colposcopy and HPV testing done.

Thank you for your answer. I wonder can my ASCUS result be caused from reasons other than HPV? Or is only HPV that causes ASCUS?

Hi dear, thanks for responding. In young women, ASCUS is caused mostly by HPV virus. Other causes are vaginal infection or cervical inflammation.
However, you don't need to worry as in most cases, cervical changes of ASCUS do not lead to cervical cancer and eventually return to normal appearance.
