Question: good morning, I an active duty Naval officer who was just informed that my latest physical, the blood tests revealed meta-myelocytes and myelocytes in my blood. They are going to retest but two scan have shown the same results. My primary care physician is referring me to a hematologist and to have a colonoscopy as i occasionally have bleeding , I have thought this was hemorrhoids, as a precautionary measure. What does this mean?

Brief Answer:
TLC &complete DLC will be more informative, bleeding due to intestial lesion

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

Presence of meta-myelocytes and myelocytes in peripheral blood suggest some kind of stress like bacterial infection.
Presence of meta-myelocytes and myelocytes is usually accompanied by increase in white blood cells.
However, normal white blood cell count can also occur without an increase in white blood cells.
It would be more informative if you could post the total leukocyte count (TLC) and differential leukocyte count (DLC).
Bleeding per rectum can occur due to hemorrhoids, polyp or growth in the intestine.
Colonoscopy will detect presence of any polyp, growth or any other lesion responsible for bleeding.
Management of bleeding can be done once diagnosis is made.

Brief Answer:
Elevation of metamyelocytes & myelocytes alone does not indicate leukemia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again,
Leukemia is characterized by increase in total leukocyte count.
There is type of leukemia in which there is presence of immature cells like metamyelocytes, myelocytes, promyelocyte and blasts called chronic myeloid leukemia.
Presence of myelocytes and metamyelocytes is not indicative of leukemia unless there are other features like elevated leukocyte count along with clinical features of leukemia.
Leukemia is not likely. The complete blood report will help me to help you better.

Please consult your gastroenterologist for colonoscopy to look for the cause of bleeding per rectum since the bleeding is of concern.

Thanks and take care
