Question: My friend's 4 month old daughter is in hospital in Indonesia with a cold but her blood test results suggest an abnormality. It would be great to have a second opinion as well as ideas for next steps.

Brief Answer:
Too early to woryy

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

Raised platelet counts in children is not very rare. Generally, this is most of the time caused by an infection (secondary thrombocytosis). It is imperative fo your friend to be calm, get other blood tests done like blood and urine cultures to identify and causing organisms so the children receives appropriate treatment.

Doing the test again when the cold runs out will be imperative to check if the platelet count levels have decreased or stayed the same, or at times increased. Guided by the clinical evolution of the child, it shall be easy for the treating team to know if the raised platelet counts were due to an infection or not.

Some blood disorders like pediatric blood cancers can also cause raised platelet counts. However, this not as common as raised platelet counts to infections.

I suggest your friend needs to be calm as of now as the cause of this raised platelet count is most likely to be infectious.

Thanks and kind regards,

Dr Bain

Brief Answer:
Thanks and no worries

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the update,

I understand the findings might seem disturbing. However, I saw the report you uploaded and keenly appreciated the findings. It is not rare to have blast cells seen in children. I think as I mentioned earlier its too early to worry much.

Lets give time for proper clinical evaluation, treat any infection and see how it goes. If need be, the test can be done again within a couple of weeks.

Kind regards,
Dr Bain
