Question: 1. what is the risk of hcv/hiv from the following situation

frequently work with people who are at high risk for both viruses. What if my hands touched a table, and I did not notice there was fluid (like blood) on it. A couple min later, I rubbed my eyes or touched the inside of my vagina (happened when using tampon in this case? I mostly use sanitizer after visits but can't remember. can these viruses pass from client to table to finger then to mucous membrane? I believe I would have touched a few other things as well.

2. what do routine blood tests show
would they show alarm for any of these viruses

thank you

Brief Answer:
practically no chances of trnamission

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.

Since you are working with high risk people, I understand your concerns but there is no need to be worried for this type of contact. HIV is not so easily transmitted. There must be prolonged contact between infected fluid and damage mucous membranes that in most cases happens during sexual intercourse. Incidental trasmission may also happen through needle pricks.

transmission through items or hands is practically not possible. Only if there is infected bleeding wound in contact with another open wound, then infection is possible. Also, HIV dies almost immediately after exposed to air, it must live i human white blood cells. Even if you touch infected blood, in few second there is no active virus in it so it cant be transmised to your parts of body. Even if virus come in contact to eye conjuctiva or vaginal wall, therisk of trasmission is almost negligible if there is no inury of these structures The same goes with hep c, which however can be but easier trasnmissed but still not on this way.
Wish you good health. Regards

I have just heard hepatitis c is very strong on inanimate surface. I don't believe a particular client was bleeding but I cannot say for sure.

So you are saying that hep cannot be transferred through touching the surface, then a few others then the vaginal wall? I obviously cannot be sure if there was injury or not. I have read mucous membrane transmission is almost non existent with hep c. why is that?

I apologize for my paranoia and thank you for your response.

Brief Answer:
hi

Detailed Answer:
Hepatitis must enter bloodstream and reach liver for replication. It cant reach blood through undamaged skin or mucous membranes. It can be transmitted by certain items such as razors and needles that are contaminated but there must be some wound that is bleeding and where virus can enter bloodstream. YOu can theoretically have virus on your hands and touch vaginal wall and cause injury and bleeding and then touch this bleeding wound with contaminated hands, but this is just theoretical risk. To prevent this, you just need to wash your hands. There is really no need to be paranoic.

Just like to be educated...

What would theoretical mean?

If no other risk factors are present, do you recommend testing?

Would routine blood tests show possible infection?

Lastly....am I crazy?!? I just a analyze the situation a lot

Brief Answer:
No reason for testing

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Theoretical means that in theory such infection may occur, but in real life chances are negligible.
I dont see reason for testing, unless for your own satisfaction.
Routine tests of liver markers may show hepatitis but after 1-2 months.

You are not crazy, but you maybe hypohondriac. There are many other diseases that people should be afraid of, and hiv and hep are not some of these. You dont have objective risk factors for infectious diseases.
