What Does My MRI Scan Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Aug 2015
Question: My wife is 81 years old and is being treated for osteoporosis. She recently received vertaboplasty in L2 and L3
Her latest MRI shows most of her vertebrae showing most are at risk of cracking
and is scheduled again for more vertoplasty in L1 and L4 or L5. She was also given epidural injections for pain with little effect.
In the interim prior to all this treatment, her stomach has protruded quite a bit. In Internet research, I found that compaction fractures of the vertebrae can cause this, but, the Doctors (primary , and Radiologists) that we go to weren't aware of this being the cause. The primary Doctor had X-Rays and Cat Scans of her Stomach with nothing showing the cause. We then went to her Gastroentologist and he found nothing inside her stomach (cancer, tumors etc.)

Who do we see for this type of problem?
We have been thinking of going to a clinic for back and spine treatment. We found Spine-Health on line and they seem to explain my wife's problems better than her doctors.
Whaat do you think and who can help?
Thank You,

Brief Answer:
Do consult Spine Health.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
At your wife's age it is common to have osteoporosis. If the disc compression and osteoporosis is at multiple levels that is not relieved with epidural steroid injections then surgical fixation is the best option. You will need a specialist spine clinic for this to deal with. It is best to consult at spine health rather than her regular orthopedician for the best care.
I hope this answers your query.

That is what I had in mind, but my concern now is the protruding stomach caused by vertebrae compaction
What can be done about this, and to what kind of specialist should I follow up and see.

Brief Answer:
Physiotherapy will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The stomach protrusion is likely to be due to weakened abdominal muscles caused by the nerve compression. This will improve once the nerve compression improves. The spine specialist will help. She also needs a regular physiotherapy to regain the lost strength of her abdominal muscles.
Hope my answer is helpful.
