What Does Hydronephrosis In Abdominal Ultrasound Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Nov 2016
Question: I was feeling pain in stomach left side last week. So thought to get it checked. Got an ultrasound of lower abdomen. All looks good, except one this that was mentioned important "left hydronephrosis"
Googled it and got to know that it means there is swelling in kidney. Is it something serious? Though I have started drinking plenty of fluids and from last 3-4 days I'm feeling OK.

Brief Answer:
Continue fluids repeat ultrasound scan after a week

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am glad to know you are pain free now. Commonly such symptoms are caused by a kidney stone. Kidney stone at times results in urine flow obstruction resulting in hydronephrosis. Based on your description, I feel the hydronephrosis is a result of kidney stone.

Now that you are pain free, it's likely that obstruction is relieved. Eventually hydronephrosis is expected to reverse.

Therefore at this point my plan of treatment is continue fluids to expel new or undetected stone and repeat scan after a week (to confirm hydronephrosis is cleared).

Hope this helps.

Regards
