default
Posted on Thu, 2 Apr 2015
Question: Several weeks ago blood work showed a WBC of 38,000. Re-test this week showed 41,000. I feel fine, am slim, fit and have never smoked. The only unusual symptom is complete loss of appetite. What are the possibilities? I really don't want to see a hematologist because I'm familiar with their needles.

Brief Answer:
It is important to exclude all possibilities including infection, malignancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Your condition need proper evaluation. It is important to exclude all possibilities with this much elevated WBC including infection, malignancy etc.

Peripheral blood smear should be done to find out any immature cells. It is important due to your age.
You may need further investigations like complete hemogram, random blood sugar, liver function test, renal function test, urine RE/ME,blood culture, ultrasound of abdomen, chest X-ray (PA view).
These basic investigations will guide further investigations.
