Question: My 54 year old son was diagnosed yesterday with pneumonia (and something else that they said they would discuss at his next appointment) and was asked if he was coughing up sputum that resembled coffee grounds. He answered no. Today, he is indeed coughing up the said sputum. Can you tell me what that potentially indicates?

Brief Answer:
It indicates blood that has been not freshly bled.

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you!

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns.

If there is bleeding inside lungs vessels (may or may not be a major issue) it stays over there and after sometime with irritation of the ongoing disease process when the patient coughs, the blood comes out with the sputum that may be coffee ground colored.

This term is utilized more for coffee ground vomitus, as that is more a common disease in population. That is due to the gastrointestinal bleeding and that bleeding when stays in the stomach, turns into this coffee ground color and comes out with vomiting.

Don't worry. Say your son to keep taking the medications and it will settle down once infection goes away. This is from infected, inflamed lung tissue.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further clinical concerns. I will be happy to get back to you shortly. If satisfied here, please give a five star rating and don't forget to close the discussion.

Regards!
